Gaming Enthusiasts

When we hear the word “video gaming,” many of us instantly think of playing video games on personal computers. But the technology that drives these video games has been around much longer than most people realize. Video gaming first began as what is now known as the arcade game. Arcade games are any type of game where the goal is to win by beating or scoring the highest score possible. Video games today have taken the idea of the arcade and improved it to include very complex interfaces, realistic game play, and highly competitive play.

Gaming has taken a major leap from the arcade to highly detailed and realistic consoles. The development of consoles such as the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Gamecube has led to the development of specialized gaming machines that can be owned by only a few individuals. Today, almost any person who reaches the age of thirteen and older is considered eligible for playing video games. For this reason, online gaming is not only found on personal computers but also on gaming consoles. Console gaming has allowed users to experience the same high quality video gaming that they would experience at an arcade while having the convenience of being able to do so anytime that they want.

Online gaming also allows for the development of video games by external third-party developers and artists. These outside developers and artists are usually referred to as video game programmers and game designers. Many of these programmers and designers are teenagers who were once dedicated to their hobbies but found the idea of working in the gaming industry exciting. They use their skills to create video games that are of superior quality and that are designed to achieve the goals of their developers.

In the early 1980s, a company by the name of Atari produced a game named Pong. This game was unique because it used a random number generator to produce a game play experience similar to what is popularly known as “poker.” Within two years, this small company had developed its own following, which in turn led to the rise of other companies. By the end of the decade, there were hundreds of companies manufacturing games for the personal computer market. In order to keep up with the rapid growth of the gaming market, all companies were trying to find new ways to attract more gamers.

The video gaming console industry has been the most successful and lucrative market for personal computers ever since its inception. Today, the gaming console business represents approximately seventy percent of the revenues of the entire personal computer market. Gaming devices have also become the device of choice for many college students who need an extra way to help pay for school. Although gaming devices have experienced a few recent setbacks, they continue to grow each year as more people become addicted to them.

Games today have advanced to such an extent that they are often enjoyed by entire communities. For instance, on any given day on the Internet there are literally thousands of individuals who are participating in online multiplayer gaming. These games involve a wide variety of different types of hardware and software that have made them one of the most popular ways to socially interact with others. In addition to having vast social impact, multiplayer gaming is also beneficial to the game developers as well. After all, if everyone who wants to play a particular type of game paid to be able to participate in it, then the developers get to make more money.
